Located just under an hours drive from Tallinn towards St Petersburg, Lahemaa (Land of Bays) is Estonia’s largest and oldest National Park. Besides its overwhelming natural beauty, virgin forests, rugged coastlines, beaches, bogs and a wealth of wildlife - Lahemaa also offers some great historical attractions from fantastically restored manor houses such as Vihula, Sagadi and Palmse to quaint historic fishing villages such as Altja. There are loads of things to see and do and even some great places to catch an authentic Estonian bite to eat, as well as a few upscale dining experiences to be had here as well. Many of the tour operators in Tallinn offer excursions to the area (especially great for the less adventurous or not so mobile traveller), but by far the best way to discover Lahemaa is by hiring a car, buying a map and exploring its many wonders for yourself. Here we have listed just a few of the best places to dine, places to lay your head or experiences to be had while in the area.
