One of the most important monasteries in the country, visiting this 11th-century masterpiece is an essential part of any trip to Strumica. Located 10km to the northwest of the city in the southern part of the small village of Veljusa, the monastery complex dates from 1080 and is famed for its small and ancient church, whose gorgeous frescos were painted in 1085 and 1164 respectively. The site includes several other buildings of note including a clock tower and a chapel.
