Dust off your best threads, because it is time to celebrate Split’s birthday once again. Befitting such a delightful city, the celebrations stretch over weeks, as the city turns out for the Feast of St. Domnius, or Sudamja.
St. Domnius (Sveti Duje in Croatian) was a Christian bishop and martyr born in Syria sometime in the 3rd century, during the reign of Diocletian. After working his way through the ranks, he eventually became bishop of Solin in AD 284, meeting his demise in martyrdom during the persecutions led by Diocletian. Domnius eventually became the patron saint of Split, and his relics are kept in the cathedral that takes his name. The feast day of St. Domnius takes place on May 7, and more than 100 events will fill Split with excitement from April 28 to May 10. You can expect everything from vibrant live music to solemn masses via sports, culture, religion, and more, including workshops, open-air cinema, and all manner of child-friendly activities. It really is the best of the city, all at once. The festivities kick off on April 28 with a novena at the spectacular St. Domnius Cathedral, while the Sveti Duje (the Croatian name for the saint) rowing regatta brings everything to a close on May 11.
