Theatrum Jerzego Nowosielskiego at PGS Sopot is a new perspective on the work of 20th-century Polish painter Jerzy Nowosielski, specifically his relationship with theatre in the broad sense of the word. On the one hand, you are presented with Nowosielski the stage designer, designing decorations for puppet theatres, and on the other, Nowosielski the painter, revealing his own 'theatre', rich in motifs and themes, played out in his paintings.

The exhibition has reconstructed the set of "Krzesiwo" (ENG: The Woodchuck) by Hanna Januszewska, based on the fairy tale by Jan Christian Andersen for the "Pinokio" Puppet Theatre in Łódź (1958), created by a group of employees of the "Groteska" Theatre in Kraków. This reconstruction was made intitially for the exhibition "Jerzy Nowosielski. Puppet Theater. Notes - Part Five" at the Starmach Gallery in 2015.

For the first time, it will also be possible to take a look at Jerzy Nowosielski's studio, which used to be located in his house on Narzymskiego Street in Kraków. We will see there furniture, objects and paintings painted by the artist. The exhibition, arranged in some part as a large collage, will give an opportunity to see anew many of the artist's canvases, which he painted between 1954 and 1996.

Jerzy Nowosielski, commenting on his art, said of the theatre: "I have no ideal of theatre. Theatre is a living human experience. You can dare to it, you can also escape from it. And all theoretical speculations on this subject are simply powerless, not to say out of place."
