Skopje’s Alexander the Great Airport is small and easy to use. Completely modernised in 2011, the combined Arrivals and Departures hall provides all the necessities for visitors preparing to leave country including a currency exchange (you can’t change Macedonian money abroad) and café. Vardar Ekspres operates a bus to the airport approximately eight times a day, departing from the Holiday Inn hotel and calling at the bus/train station the Capitol Mall shopping centre on the way. A single fare currently costs 175den. Taxis are best booked in advance and if you choose the right one should cost no more that 900den or €15 (payable in either currency). We recently flew out of the airport on a Wizzair flight and were surprised to learn that everyone is required to check in regardless of whether they already have a boarding pass or not. At busy times, this inconvenience adds about 30 minutes to the time it takes to arrive at the airport and get through passport control.
