Dramatically enlarged by the destruction of the massive National Bank and Army House during the 1963 earthquake and until recently surrounded by mostly nondescript architecture, this vast open space is a popular spot to meet and socialise and is today instantly recognisable thanks to the huge Warrior on a Horse monument dominating its centre. Featuring little of its original form with the exception of the now protected 1926 Ristiḱ Palace, familiar to all thanks to the massive Skopsko beer ad on the roof, Plostad Makedonija (Macedonia Square) is surrounded by an increasing number of decent bars and restaurants and for many visitors it will become a familiar and often visited landmark.
