Markov Monastery is located in a village called Markova Sušica, not far from Skopje. The construction of this monastery began in 1345 and was decorated with frescos in 1376/77, under the rule of Macedonian king Marko, who was very popular in the local oral traditions and literature, and whose name the monastery now bears. The grounds contain a church dedicated to Saint Demetrius. Also, the program of the fresco decoration is one of the most unique in the whole Byzantine world.
