Dating from the middle of the 15th century, the Čifte (Double) Hamam in the heart of the Old Bazaar was used as a bath house as it was originally constructed until 1915. The layout of the building is symmetrical, with the heating room at its centre and separate bathing areas for men and women, each with their own entrance, at either ends of the building. Interestingly, Skopje’s Jews used the place for ritual bathing too during Ottoman times when a special marble pool was installed for them. Reconstructed after the 1963 earthquake, the building now houses the city’s Contemporary Art Gallery and is worth visiting for both the architecture and the wide range of exhibitions that regularly take place inside.
