High on a remote hill some 10km east of Kumanovo and a few minutes southwest of the village of Mlado Nagoričane stands the Zebrnjak Monument. Originally constructed from granite blocks in 1937 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Kumanovo during the First Balkan War in which the Ottoman army were defeated and forced to retreat, the monument, that used to include a high pointed tower, was partially destroyed by the occupying Bulgarians in 1942. Although plans have been discussed to rebuild it in its entirety, all that remains is the base structure which contains the remains of many of the soldiers who lost their lives during the battle.
