Founded in 1913 by Antanas Gricevičius (1877-1949) who studied confectionery art in Šiauliai, Vilnius and St. Petersburg, the Rūta chocolate factory started life inside a small timber house and today employs over 250 people. This outstanding museum on the current factory premises takes visitors through the history of chocolate, from its ancients origins in South America through to its arrival in Lithaunia and the turbulent history of Rūta itself. Both informative and fun for people of all ages, the museum also runs special chocolate workshops for children and adults, and although you don’t technically exit through the gift shop, it’s strongly advisable to visit the shop downstairs before you leave.
