Begraafplaats Groenendaal

Although Den Bosch doesn’t boast a world famous cemetery like the Père Lachaise in Paris with its legendary Jim Morrison grave, the 12-hectare large Groenendaal cemetery is definitely worth a visit. Since 1858 a large number of dignitaries from Den Bosch have made it their final resting place. Designed to look like a public garden, it houses many tombs, special graves and architectural masterpieces like the neo-Gothic bishop’s chapel from 1882. This particular grave and a number of others are excellent examples of late 19th- and early 20th-century Catholic funerary sculptures. They stand out due to their high artistic value, the fact that many were created by important sculptors and architects or the particular historic significance of the dearly departed buried beneath. A number of separate graveyards for war victims and several fraternal orders can also be found in the complex. You can reach Groenendaal by taking bus No.73, 165 or 166 to Orthen from the 's-Hertogenbosch Central Station.

It's actually in walking distance from the station (only 25 minutes) but make sure you have enough time to wander around. I had 3 hours but it turned out to be not enough. This cemetary could also serve as a public parc. Highly recommended.
