Riga Black Balsam, Latvia’s national drink, was originally concocted as a cure-all elixir by Riga pharmacist Abraham Kunze in 1752. The strong black bitter (45% ABV) is still used today to alleviate hangovers and stomach aches and as the main ingredient in many local cocktails. Consisting of over 24 herbal ingredients, it looks like used motor oil and is sold in charming ceramic jugs. Unfortunately, the bottles weigh as much as bricks and you certainly can’t stuff them in your carry-on bag, so we suggest you do the next best thing and buy a Riga Black Balzams T-shirt, which is available at most Latvijas Balzams shops around town for only €5.99! You can even wear it on your trip back home. If you’d like to bring a bottle back as a souvenir then buy one at a duty-free shop at the airport. Price: €5.99.
