The female equivalent of the St. Jovan Bigorski Monastery some 20km to the north and dating back to the 14th century, this beautiful little ensemble of buildings overlooking Lake Debar offers an interesting 30 minutes for anyone passing through the region. Just north of Debar on the main road towards the Mavrovo National Park, head down the path to the main church, which dates from 1852 and that has a selection of candles, soap and holy water for sale by the main entrance. If you’re lucky you might bump into a nun who can tell you stories of the building’s long and complicated history.
