Freedom Park

The 52-hectare Freedom Park is an impressive memorial to South Africa’s history and heritage and is themed around humanity, freedom and healing. Visiting the site is a humbling experience as you get to appreciate the different struggles South Africa has faced along the path to democracy. The park is set across a rocky hill that boasts panoramic views over the city. The most striking of the many thought-provoking memorials that are spread through the park is the vast Wall of Names that lists the heroes and heroines who died in the struggle for freedom. A guided tour is highly recommended.

At the base of the hill is the extensive /Hapo museum (entrance is included in the Freedom Park ticket price) which through multimedia displays and archival footage tells the long story of the people of South Africa's struggle for freedom, starting with the early slave trade and the devastating impact of colonialism on indigenous communities. The section of the museum detailing the effects of the discovery of gold and diamonds on the country and the exploitation of black African workers is particularly well presented, as is the section focusing on the armed struggle against apartheid.

Combine a visit with a trip to the nearby Voortrekker Monument for a strikingly different perspective on the South African story.
