As one of the only restaurants on Ostrów Tumski, and literally just metres from Poznań Cathedral, Restauracja Tumska doesn't need to try hard to maintain a steady flow of clients. Given the timber beams crossing the ceiling and a roof that was almost certainly thatched when first erected, Tumska profiles as your typical country-style restaurant with a folksy kitsch interior serving low-grade Polish dishes to tourists. But this upscale establishment eschews the cliches with simple but classy decor and excellent modern interpretations of regional cuisine. In fact, there are few better places for trying local specialties like czernina (a brothy soup with duck blood), roasted duck with apples, or zraz (beef roulades). For vegetarians, the celery pierogi are inventive and delicious, and the butternut squash is the kind of hearty comfort food you can make a carnivore jealous with. Although there are certainly slightly more affordable meals in Poznań, Tumska is a great value and a strong ambassador for Wielkopolskan cuisine. While the interior walls double as a gallery for local artists (with varying results), the garden tables are a joy on warm afternoons.
