If you thought the early-18th century interiors of the Franciscan Church were impressive, its basement harbours unique hand-crafted masterpieces from the early-21st century: two enormous 3D models of Poznań, meticulously made by Benedictine monk Krzysztof Przybyła (take a bow). The first is a 50m2 model of Poznań as it looked in 1618, built on a scale of 1:150, that took 6 years to make. A second model, built on a scale of 1:60 and occupying 27m2, shows the 11th century stronghold on Ostrów Tumski. Although dated relative to the multimedia expectations of today’s audiences, both are enhanced by audio commentary and visual effects, including dry ice simulating a fire. Foreigners are given headsets broadcasting heavily accented commentary in the language of their choice, though this is at times drowned out by hilarious background noise that includes medieval soldiers screaming in agony. The shows are timed, 27mins long and charmingly antiquated, but worth it for hobbyists, history buffs and anyone else who can appreciate the incredible craftsmanship on display.
A third, touchable model - this one of the Old Town Square - is also available for the blind.
For years there has been talk of Przybyła's current project: a 500m2 model of the Poznań Fortress. Still in progress, if it is ever completed, it is expected to be the largest model of its type in the world. Dawaj Krzysiu!
