The oldest museum in the city is also one of its finest, although don’t expect much in the way of modern bells and whistles. The Soares dos Reis National Museum has been a staple of Porto’s cultural life since 1833 and is housed in the beautiful Carrancas Palace, an aesthetic that meshes well with its standing as the first national museum in Portugal. Portuguese art of the 19th and 20th century is the main event, although don’t expect much in the way of interactive information or the English language.
