Built by the Teutonic Knights in 1350, this magnificent edifice with its rising tiled roof is the grandest civil construction in Gdańsk. Until 1356, when the Radunia Canal was built, the mill was powered by slaves turning 18 huge wheels. It was the largest industrial plant in Europe during the Middle Ages and functioned until the end of WWII. Since then the mill has served some less than suitable roles, including a PEWEX (a Communist-era shop where you could buy goods not available in normal Polish stores but only with foreign currency) and until 2016, as a rather sad looking shopping mall. Closed to the public for years and undergoing restoration, Gdańsk's Grand Mill will become the home of the city's Amber Museum in July 2021! Around the back, you will find the romantically perched Millers' Guild House in the middle of the canal!
