There used to be seven bridges across the river Arno that were all demolished during the bombings of World War II that split the city in two; aside from two that were lost forever, the current five have all been reconstructed. They are the Ponte della Vittoria, Ponte della Fortezza, Ponte Solferino, Ponte della Cittadella or Ponte a Mare, and Ponte di Mezzo, the oldest of the gang that stands in the middle of the city; every last Sunday, the Tramontana and Mezzogiorno quarters battle it out on the bridge playing Gioco del Ponte, an old medieval game.
