A village of 400 souls in the most splendid setting in the middle of the Fir of Hotova national park, Frashër is 40km north of Përmet with various natural and cultural highlights. It's best known among Albanians as the birthplace of national heroes Abdyl, Naim and Sami Frashëri, politicians, writers and poets who were important during Albania's national renaissence in the 19th century, when the village was much larger. Their family house now houses a small a museum - closed at time of research - with three big statues outside. Just through the forest to the south of the village stands the modest Frashër Tekke, a Bektashi religious centre that was originally erected in 1781, but destroyed by Greek rebels in 1914, only to be rebult with help from the Albanian diaspora in the USA ten years later.
