Sicily's rich status in the ancient world has lead to a wealth of archeological discoveries on display at the site of a Renaisance monestary which is the oldest public museum in Sicily. The beautiful Greek and Roman discoveries would be the envy of almost any regional archeological museum we can think of, but it's the metopes of the temples of Selinunte that are the real gem of the collection. The metopes, a decorative feature above the Greek temple's columns, were discovered by two Englishmen in 1821. Angell and Harris wanted to take these treasures back to England. Luckily the plan did not go through!
