This picturesque little town is found in the Chiemgau region in southeastern Bavaria, and is a hop, skip and jump from Salzburg in Austria, which makes a great side trip. The highest lift is 1670m, and skiing is quite a bit cheaper here. Taking the train (two hours, €18), you’ll need to change at Traunstein. By car, take the A8 in the direction of Salzburg, then exit at Siegsdorf follow the signs going south to Ruhpolding (about an 1.5 hours).
