The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne is a world-renowned art gallery with an expansive collection of over 70,000 works from different times and cultures. Located in the heart of the city, it is a must-visit destination for visitors to the capital of Victoria. The gallery houses one of Australia's most renowned collections featuring artworks from Asia, Europe, Australia and more. Notable pieces include Vincent van Gogh's Self-Portrait (1889) and Jackson Pollock's Blue Poles (1952).
The NGV has been open since 1861 and features a wide variety of exhibitions throughout the year. It also hosts events such as artist lectures, workshops and talks that provide insight into the history and significance of the works on display. Visitors can explore State Galleries which focus on specific themes or movements like contemporary Aboriginal art or Japanese ceramics. There are also permanent galleries including Melbourne Now which showcases Australian design, fashion and architecture; The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia which focuses on Australian art; and International Collection which includes works from other countries around the world.
In addition to its impressive collection, the NGV also offers educational opportunities for children with interactive activities such as drawing classes at KidZone or ArtPlay for hands-on experiences. To further enjoy your visit there are tours available in multiple languages as well as a variety of dining options at cafés, bars and restaurants situated within the gallery itself.
