While there's no shortage of superbly talented young artists and other creative types working both in Ljubljana and elsewhere in the country, when it comes to the business side of things, the market for contemporary art in Slovenia is still in its embryonic stage. This has led to the unfortunate situation whereby some of the most innovative creators have had to pack up their ateliers and head for Vienna, Berlin, London or even New York to make a name for themselves.
The Ravnikar Gallery aims to reverse this trend by promoting and selling the works of emerging artists from the region, and hopefully changing the (mis)perception that collecting art is something reserved for the wealthy. Founded by Piera Ravnikar, one of the driving forces behind the hugely popular Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture as well as its smaller sibling Dobra Vaga, the Ravnikar Gallery is a much welcomed and needed step towards ensuring that Ljubljana maintains its long-held status as a cultural and artistic hub into the 21st century and beyond.
A contemporary art gallery dedicated to the presentation and promotion of visual culture through a diverse platform and a rich calendar of events, since its inception, the gallery's vision has been to showcase local art production and its integration with international trends through outward-looking activities. The gallery aims to foster a dynamic and meaningful exchange between artists, curators, collectors and the general public through the development of international partnerships and local networks.
