Photogenically located on an island in the middle of the Krka River, Otočec Castle dates back to at least 1252 when it first found its way into the annals of history as the property of the Counts of Višnja Gora. Over the next 700 years ownership passed through a variety of distinguished hands, including kings, noble families and even the Catholic Church. The castle has seen many architectural changes over the years, with minor alterations taking place well into the 19th century although it can generally be said to have a Baroque appearance. After being largely destroyed by the Partisans during the Second World War, it has since been rebuilt and now serves as a five-star luxury hotel owned and operated by the good people at Terme Krka.
