When it’s cold, wet and gloomy outside, there is one thing that might push you out of the door or reward you after a treacherous journey or a tough day at work, and that's the thought of a delicious, comforting hot chocolate. Yep, that velvety hug in a mug is often just the ticket. But where should you go to get the best one? There’s no end of choices here in the city, but we’ve narrowed down the options for you and here are our top five recommendations.

Cacao

This popular cafe is primarily known for its cakes and ice creams, and its prime location along the river always pleases weary tourists and returning locals. It’s easy to fill the seats in summer, but over the winter months, there’s another very good reason to swing by, and that's their hot chocolate. With more than fifteen options, customers can select masterpieces made with real chocolate and topped with fruit, nuts, creamy liqueurs, marshmallows and whipped cream.

Slaščičarna pri Vodnjaku

Tucked away in the old town along Stari trg, this much loved bakery-come-cafe is a popular rest spot which also serves awesome hot chocolate drinks. You’ll find a selection of dark and white chocolate options on the menu, including tiramisu, orange and cinnamon, various fruit toppings, and, of course, the ever-popular candies and marshmallows.

Lolita

Being part of the Kaval Group, you’re guaranteed an excellent dining and service experience. With absurdly high ceilings, exposed brick walls, great views through huge plate glass windows and super comfortable seating, this riverside café leaves little to be desired. Delectable-looking cakes are displayed in specially-built cases, which go perfectly hand-in-hand with a sumptuous cup of hot chocolate. Indulgent, it may be, but sometimes you have to let your taste buds have a little fun.

Zvezda

A bustling café frequented by a battalion of clients from students to pearl-laden old ladies, Zvezda’s décor leans in the direction of clean and sophisticated with some really beautiful touches and plenty of light streaming in from the outside. These guys have been in business for over 25 years (and have several other cafes around town), so they know a thing or two about sweet treats, especially chocolate in any shape or form. So a hot, chocolatey cup of comfort is always a winner here.

Nabrežje 15

Nabrežje 15 fits right into the cafe culture which Ljubljana excels at. With an excellent terrace beside the Ljubljanica River, we’d recommend sitting outside and watching both the river and people flow by. And what better accompaniment than an indulgent hot chocolate?
