Colditz castle’s history begins in 1046, but today it is best known for the daring escapes - and escape plans - conducted within its walls during World War II. Allied prisoners were kept there because the Nazis thought the castle to be inescapable. The prisoners had other ideas, however, and their many successful attempts soon gave the castle its nickname “The Colditz Escape Academy”. Today you can take a tour of the castle and learn about its fascinating history.
