Originally used as a leper colony starting in 1278, the cemetery also served as a staging point for French troops during the Battle of Nations in 1813. Johann Sebastian Bach was buried here until his remains were moved to the St. Thomas Church in 1949. The cemetery is no longer used, but serves as an urban refuge from city ruckus.
