Although the interior isn’t as rough around the edges as the original location, Gauja’s new home in a dilapidated wooden building on Stabu iela still offers plenty of old school ambience, especially the vintage 1970s Soviet furniture and lighting fixtures. Cheap Latvian beer is the main attraction here and you can even order food, desserts and proper coffee from a fancy machine, which will no doubt be considered a major upgrade by its hipster clientele. Much larger than its previous incarnation on Tērbatas, the new Gauja appears to be ready to take on some serious crowds. Perhaps the mint green walls will have a soothing effect on the neighbourhood’s frugal, yet hard-drinking locals.

Love this place ! Mainly a student hangout I think, but oldies like me feel at home here as well. Has the best Brengulu beer in Riga. Great to sit outside and listen to the sound of traffic on the cobbles. Incidentally, one change from a genuine Soviet apartment is that the bust of Lenin has been replaced by a bust of Blaumanis !!
