Chapel of Corpus Christi

  Barborská 679, Kutná Hora      (+ 420) 327 515 796     more than a year ago
The construction of a karner, or a two-storey cemetery chapel with an ossuary in the close vicinity of the Cathedral of St. Barbara began in the mid-80s of the 14th century. How the chapel acquired patrocinium – dedication to the Corpus Christi is unknown. It apparently changed to the chapel from the Cathedral of St. Barbara, which was originally called the New Chapel of Corpus Christi and St. Barbara. Only the lower floor intended for the ossuary remains from the original two-storey project. The upper chapel was not completed for reasons unknown.
The lower space of the chapel has remained preserved in intact form to this day. At the end of the last century, the condition of the chapel deteriorated so much that it found itself on the list of the hundred most endangered monuments in the world. The demanding reconstruction was completed in 2000. Currently the chapel is open to the public, while also serving as an exhibition and concert space. There is a viewpoint on the Chapel of the Corpus Christi, which offers a view of the surroundings.
Visit available as the part of St. Barbara‘s Cathedral tour.
