Places of worship — churches of different Christian denominations, mosques and synagogues — were an extremely important part of the beautiful and elaborate Polish wooden architectural landscape. They were built of local, readily available materials, using technical solutions typical for the area, and the remarkable skills of local craftsmen. The photographs presented in this exhibition include wooden synagogues, no longer in existence, that were located in the territory of what is today the Polish Lithuanian-Belarusian borderlands. The beautiful decorative details, unique design solutions and intricate ornamentation drew the photographers, resulting in the incredible body of work showing off the beauty of wooden synagogues.
