Exhibition on Screen presents one of the most talked about exhibitions of the year: Van Gogh and Japan. The exhibition-based art film was directed and produced by Phil Grabsky, and it is based on the Amsterdam exhibition of the same title. Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan but he admitted that it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art. Japanese art in the middle of the 19th century had the biggest impact on artists like Monet, Degas and, above all, Van Gogh. He defined himself as a modern artist with clear Asian precursors. The film travels not only to France and the Netherlands but also to Japan to further explore the remarkable heritage that so affected Van Gogh and made him the artist we know of today.
