Kuchnia u Babci Maliny

  ul. Sławkowska 19 ,   Old Town          (+48) 12 422 76 01     30 Sep 2024

Once hidden deep in a courtyard cellar and spread by word-of-mouth between local students and backpackers, this veteran Old Town eatery has exhumed itself onto the main street just metres from their old location...and in the process lost quite a bit of its charm. Although it may have been simply incidental, U Babci Maliny (Grandma Raspberry's) was almost like a gastronomic speakeasy where one had to go on a journey of discovery and then literally win approval from a crossword-puzzled granny just to gain entry. The treasure at the end of the quest was huge portions of delicious and affordable Polish homecooking - breadbowls of sour rye soup (żurek), overflowing plates of potato pancakes smothered in goulash, sour cream and shredded cheese, pork knuckle that slips of the bone onto a bed of stewed cabbage.... Despite an illogical, over-the-top cottage-core interior, there was a certain charm and authenticity to dining there - both of which feel betrayed by the high-profile move directly onto tourist-trafficked Sławkowska Street, even if it's still literally underground. With a new design that aims for classy but feels somehow outdated (not to mention soulless), and prices that don't feel like the bargain they once were, all that remains is the truly yummy food. If you're being introduced to Polish food for the first time - this is still an excellent place to go. The same can be said if you've been away from Polish cuisine for some time and are having the cravings. Grandma Raspberry still knows how to cook Polski comfort food. But she doesn't make you feel special like she once did; her hospitality just isn't the same.

O Grandmas... absolutely humungous plates of food. We had the kotleti domovy and it was so big, I burst out laughing - could the plate be any bigger? And then there was the garlic butter melting away on top and the scrumptious lighter than light juicy cabbage... Luckily we saw someone grab a takeaway box and so we could take our leftovers with us. Although its cost peanuts, it's too tasty to leave there....
