Founded in 2006 by a group of young Kraków artists, recently graduated local universities, the New Theatre stages contemporary plays and performances in Polish with English subtitles. Originally located at Gazowa 21, the theatre moved to its gorgeous new space in the building of the former Jewish Community headquarters in 2016, adding Proxima to its name at this time. Always eager to provoke cultural debate, but also presenting performances for children, the theatre was censured by Poland's conservative right-wing government in 2022 - a note which they are no doubt proud of. Their headquarters building is also home to a second, smaller stage - Scena Berlin (Berlin Stage) - and hosts various events, including concerts, drag and burlesque shows.
