St. Patrick may be the patron saint of Ireland, but many St. Patrick’s Day traditions were born in the United States. In Ireland, since 1631, St. Patrick’s Day has been a religious holy day to commemorate the anniversary of the 5th-century death of the missionary credited with spreading Christianity to Ireland. Outside of Ireland, however, particularly in the United States, that tradition has generally morphed into a jovial celebration of Irish iconography and stereotypes, including wearing green, dressing like a leprechaun and drinking copious amounts of alcohol.

Here in Kraków, Irish culture is a bit limited, but there's only one place to celebrate St. Patrick's Day - Irish Pub Pod Papugami. A nice amalgamation of a classic Irish pub and Cracovian cellar bar, Pod Papugami has a friendly, sociable atmosphere beloved by lads, ladies and gentlemen alike. Filled with Irish bric-a-brac, over two levels the pub offers a billiards table, darts, plasma screens streaming sports, fresh baked pizza and pints of Murphy’s, Guinness and cider.

St. Patrick's Day celebrations here will take place over several days, with special events, contests and concerts planned. Visit their FB page for full details, wear green and join in the festivities.
