Józef Piłsudski Bridge

Kazimierz         more than a year ago
The oldest, and arguably most beautiful, bridge spanning the Wisła River in Kraków, Piłsudski Bridge connects the districts of Kazimierz and Podgórze via Krakowska Street. Designed by a team led by Professor Andrzej Pszenicki, work on the bridge was first undertaken in 1925; in that same year the Podgórze Bridge - which stood where Bernatek Footbridge is today - was closed due to its poor condition. The decision was made to build the bridge at its present location so that it would make any easier connection with Plac Wolnica, however the Podgórze Market Hall had to be demolished as a result. Opened in 1933, the bridge is remarkable for its riveted steel design and is sometimes referred to as the 'Turtle Bridge' due to its shape. Blown up by retreating German forces at the end of World War II, it was temporarily replaced by a wooden footbridge before before being reconstructed in 1948. At 147.5 meters long and 18.5 meters wide, the bridge accommodates pedestrians, cyclists, cars and trams. It was also featured in the film Schindler's List. Renovated in 2019-20, the bridge now boasts modern lighting that illuminates the original steel structure and looks lovely reflected in the river below.
