Dom Machina

pl. Św. Ducha 2 ,   Old Town         09 Sep 2024
This odd little building behind Słowacki Theatre was designed by the same architect (Jan Zawiejski) at the same time (1893) as Kraków's opulent grand theatre, and served actually served as its exclusive power house. Today part of the 'Kraków Industrial Heritage Route,' this old electrical station - known as 'Dom Machina' or the Machine House - was ironically designed by Zawiejski to resemble a neo-renaissance villa. In 1905 it was connected to the municipal power station and become a paint shop for the theatre, before finally becoming a smaller stage for more intimate theatre performances in the 1960s - a role in which it continues today as 'Scena Miniatura.' On the Planty side of the building is one of Kraków's best best gardens in summertime.
