Favoured by Jewish tourists and sightseeing groups, this veteran restaurant on Szeroka Street capably fills its niche, playing to its crowd with an olde world atmosphere and menu of Polish-Jewish classics. Although it looks to have all the makings of a tourist trap, to be fair, there are now few places which really lean into prewar Jewish culture left in Kazimierz. As the menu - which includes traditional Israeli and Polish dishes, as well as some more contemporary tastes and vegetarian options - has evolved to cater to more varied tastes, it has also become the last bastion of regional Jewish recipes like 'kreplachy' (pierogi stuffed with liver), 'cholent' (stew with beef, beans, barley and potatoes) and 'holiszkes' (Jewish-style cabbage rolls). It's hardly haute cuisine, but the interiors are stylishly elegant, significantly devoid of kitsch, and include a well-stocked wine cellar and lovely interior courtyard garden. Most desirable during the high season, of course, are the exterior tables in the front patio, which catch light late into the afternoon and regularly host klezmer concerts. While Awiw won't win any points for originality, it delivers on decent Jewish-influenced cuisine, good hospitality and a pleasant atmosphere.
