We spend a lot of our time slaving away at the laptop, so finding a convivial atmosphere in which to type, type, type is often of optimum importance. Košice is home to some excellent cafes no matter the need, but a handful of them really come to the fore when it comes to long days spent writing about, oh you know, national parks, Instagrammable spots, the usual. These are the best cafes in Košice for anyone looking to get productive.
If you’re unsure where to find us in Košice, the chances are we’ll be at Halmi Place. Stroll through the passage off of Hlavni at number 21, take a left before the umbrellas and stroll up the grand staircase, into a co-working coffee-drinking space of breathtaking magnificence. If you close your eyes tight enough, you might just be able to imagine being some sort of grand old noble, but we’re happy to sit with a cold lemonade, hot coffee or whatever else and live in the now. Quite possibly our favourite place in town.
Coffee, tea, service, charm, decor, style, did we mention the service? Clematis Coffee & Tea Shop really does stand out from the crowd when it comes to the latter, providing assistance in deciphering the confusing world of specialty tea and the less confusing world of fine, fine coffee. You can also buy leaves and beans to take home, although we recommend making the most of this experience.
An immensely popular cafe and restaurant in the very centre of Košice, Slávia has been enchanting visitors with its grace and sophistication for well over a century. This is a callback to the days of empire, and it isn’t difficult to image noblemen and women spending their afternoons here, sipping coffee in the morning before moving on to some truly extravagant dishes later in the day. The a la carte menu is one of the best in town.
A hyper-stylish spot on Košice’s main drag, Pogo Urban Caffe isn’t afraid to try and tick a whole heap of boxes. The coffees and teas are exactly as coffees and teas should be, while the breakfast options are as vast as they are tasty. Speaking of vast, the cocktail list does not disappoint. Pogo’s interior fits the varied vibe of the place, a calming balance of minimalist chic and plants, plants, plants.
Sometimes we think we’re tired of the whole ‘hygge’ thing, then we step foot in a place like Bølge. and all is forgotten. Scandinavian chic allied with quality coffee is always going to get the thumbs up from Team IYP, and Bølge. takes the cake as Košice’s premier joint for such things. There are also some fantastic beers available, craft brews from all over the continent, and some rather interesting local lemonades (honey and coriander? Sure, why not…).
