Despite many of the cafes in Košice not bothering to open their doors until 9am, there are still a host of places to pick up breakfast if you find yourself wandering the centre in the morning. ‘Breakfast’ is flexible of course, covering everything from healthy food bowls to plates that are 95% stodge and grease (we’ll have the latter), all of which you’ll find in Košice. The opening time thing lends itself to a big brunch, arguably the finest meal of the day and one that Košice prepares with aplomb. Well, with ingredients, to be exact.
A hyper-stylish spot on Košice’s main drag, Pogo Urban Caffe isn’t afraid to try and tick a whole heap of boxes. The coffees and teas are exactly as coffees and teas should be, while the breakfast options are as vast as they are tasty. Speaking of vast, the cocktail list does not disappoint. Pogo’s interior fits the varied vibe of the place, a calming balance of minimalist chic and plants, plants, plants.
An immensely popular cafe and restaurant in the very centre of Košice, Slávia has been enchanting visitors with its grace and sophistication for well over a century. This is a callback to the days of empire, and it isn’t difficult to image noblemen and women spending their afternoons here, sipping coffee in the morning before moving on to some truly extravagant dishes later in the day. The a la carte menu is one of the best in town.
Hilton is an international byword for class and elegance (as long as we aren’t talking about heiresses), so finding one of Slovakia’s finest restaurants in Košice’s premier hotel isn’t going to shock you. Olive Tree is particularly famous for its breakfasts, arguably the best in the city. The restaurant has won regional awards, which should tell you all you need to know.
That’s quite the name you’ve got there. Raňajkáreň Rozprávka is another fabulous cafe on Košice’s prettiest street, an idyllic option in a most idyllic setting. Breakfast is when this place really comes to the fore, with a bevy of early morning pick-me-ups that will help you start the day on the right foot. The style of the place is an absolute delight too.
What do you expect from a barista who claims to make the best espresso in the city? We’re not sure if you’d actually expect the best espresso, but that’s what you’re going to get at this little cafe on Dominican Square. Sit in the sun (or the shade) and watch the traders of the morning market go about their business, complete with a fantastic espresso and a bite or two for breakfast.
