Established in 1994 and covering almost 30,000 hectares of wetlands, rivers and canals, the Nemunas Delta Regional Park lies just south of Klaipėda and offers a wonderful adventure away from the smoke and the dirt of the city. Populated with all manner of interesting sights and noticeable for its pre-war German architecture that dominates much of the landscape, find curious ethnographic cemeteries, lagoon-side restaurants serving smoked fish dishes, the island town of Rusnė complete with nesting storks on the rooftops during the summer and Ventės Ragas, famed for its ornithological station where birds including the white-tailed eagle and the barnacle goose are caught and tagged during their annual migration along the East Atlantic Flyway.
