Probably built by the Ottomans towards the end of the 17th century and exploiting the abundance of volcanic activity in the region, the Kežovica Spa centre in the southwestern suburbs of Štip offer a glorious opportunity to combine an inexpensive mineral spa treatment with a step back in time. Facilities, which include the option of a place to stay if required, are humble, but the treatments, which range from simple pampering to more serious medical therapy, are good, and the experience is well worth the small amount of cash required to visit. For more information when on the ground, ask at the good people at the Štip City Museum.
