Pilot heroes of the nation, Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas emigrated to the United States independently at early ages, changing their names to Stephen Darius and Stanley T. Girenas and meeting for the first time in the 1920s. Unsuccessfully crossing the Atlantic together in July 1933, the aviators are remembered with this 25m bronze structure built 60 years after their deaths according to the original 1937 plans.
