It put Kassel on the map of modern art, so it is only fitting that documenta gets it own permanent exhibition in its hometown. The ‘about: documenta’ exhibition opened in late 2019 to great acclaim, showcasing the very best of the festival and the confident values and ethics that have made it such an important part of the (five year) art calendar. The Neue Galerie is a fitting location for it too, the gallery being practically inseparable from the festival every time it comes around. A number of different rooms showcase different aspects of documenta, from the sheer creative side of things through to the role played by the visitor, a role that is practically the opposite of a bystander. This is art to get involved with, you can be sure about that. If you only visit one exhibition in Kassel, make it this one. You should obviously make time for more than one exhibition, but you get the point.
