A beautiful piece of urban architecture that will forever be linked to tragedy, the Kapija (Gate) is one of Tuzla’s most famous landmarks. It is the central feature of the pedestrian zone, a gorgeous green structure that acts as a real nervous centre for the many streets of the city centre, but it is the horrifying events of May 25, 1995 that have given it an extra significance. On that day, the centre was shelled and 71 young people (average age: 23) were killed, a group of young people doing nothing more than celebrating the famous Day of Youth. The Kapija is now a monument to those lives lost, and the words of Bosnian poet Mak Dizdar are engraved on its walls, along with the hearts and minds of Tuzla’s people.
