Mazwana uses symbolism and abstraction to explore mental illness, relationships and popular culture. Her work often has a strong storytelling component to it and these new paintings on canvas and paper continue in this vein.
Showing alongside it is the exhibition New Signings which features work by the newest artists to join the Kalashnikovv family. The new additions are: painter and photographer Charity Vilakazi, mixed media artist Boemo Dialle, collagist Mncedi Madolo and textile artist Tinyiko Makwakwa. Each push the art scene in different ways and fit with Kalashnikovv’s ethos of challenging art conventions.
The opening of these two exhibitions coincides with Kalashnikovv’s move to a new gallery, that opens with a celebration on Sat, Sep 10. The new gallery is located on 69 Juta Street, Braamfontein and promises a larger space for the duo behind Kalashnikovv to keep driving and challenging the art world in Johannesburg.
Opening event at Kalashnikovv's new gallery, 69 Juta St, Braamfontein, on Sat, Sep 10 at 11:00. The exhibitions will run until Fri, Sep 30.
