Woza Albert!
Friday Jun 1 - Sunday Jun 17
163 Civic Blvd, Braamfontein
A fantastically clever and witty play that pokes fun at the absurdities of the white rulers of apartheid South Africa and their religious pretences, the play deftly mixes laugh-out-loud humour with poignant reminders and criticism of the cruelty of the apartheid system. Despite being written some three decades ago Woza Albert! feels as relevant today as ever with the painful truths of poverty, exploited workers, hypocritical leaders and the fear of foreigners still familiar problems in our present day society.
Woza Albert's two stars Segomotso Modise and Hamilton Dlamini, who play variously a child street vendor, a barber, two workmen in a brick factory, a domestic worker, an elderly homeless man, migrant workers on a train, PW Botha and Morena himself, bring an irrepressible energy to the stage, nailing the play's razor sharp physical and verbal comedy with brutal effect and giving the production an invigorating momentum that will leave you feeling on a high. A triumph!
