In our monthly Where to Stay hotel news round-up, we take a look at the latest trends, special offers and new hotel launches happening in South Africa that you should know about.

In this month's edition we look at some iconic hotels getting a major revamp, fresh winter specials to take advantage of plus an aeroplane turned boutique hotel near the Kruger Park. Catch up on our April news round-up here and our May hotel news here.  

The Northcliff now serving High Tea

Perched on top of the Northcliff ridge in west Joburg, The Northcliff boutique hotel is a local favourite for its spectacular views. The hotel's small bookings-only restaurant Kranz has already become hugely popular for its Sunday lunches and gourmet dinners and the hotel is now adding a new High Tea offering into the mix. Currently High Tea is available Monday to Friday, strictly by prior booking, for a minimum of four people and costs from R350 per person (including a glass of bubbly).

The Fairmont Zimbali Resort to reopen in December

The Capital Hotels & Apartments group has taken over the Fairmont Zimbali Resort on the KwaZulu Natal north coast following the iconic property’s entrance into business rescue last year. As part of the acquisition, The Capital group intends to invest over R40 million in upgrades and plans to reopen the hotel in time for the December 2021 summer peak season.

The Winchester Mansions in Cape Town gets a major revamp

Built in 1922 and converted into a hotel in 1958, The Winchester Mansions hotel on Sea Point promenade in Cape Town has long been a favourite for its rich history, fabulous sea views and distinctive architecture. The famous hotel has recently been taken over by Newmark hotel group and is currently undergoing an extensive R90-million renovation that includes the addition of new sea-facing rooms, plus a revitalisation of the hotel’s magnificent courtyard garden and other public areas. South Africa has no shortage of quirky and unusual hotels, from the luxury Kruger Shalati – Train on the Bridge, to the spectacular Kagga Kamma ‘sky rooms’ nestled in natural caves in the Karoo. In Hoedspruit, Limpopo, near the Kruger Park you can now also sleep inside a transformed Boeing 727 aeroplane. The Aerotel Boutique Hotel already has one former commercial airliner housing six hotel rooms and recently added to its collection a huge Boeing 727 that will be transformed into 18 ‘VIP’ guest rooms, all of course with an aviation theme. Winter holidays at One & Only Cape Town

The luxurious One & Only hotel in Cape Town is offering something for all the family during the July winter school holidays with a two-week winter holiday programme for its guests. The programme includes Olympics-themed events at the resort’s kids club, culinary classes in the pastry kitchen, yoga lessons and a Christmas in July celebration on July 18.
