"Johannesburg's inner city can seem like a malevolent payground with its equipment scattered across broken fields, but it is still a place for life to reinvent itself... these stories are replete with wild mixtures of feelings and astute intelligence, reminding us how little we know about the cities we live in." – AbdouMaliq Simone on Wake Up This is Joburg.
Wake Up, This is Joburg is a compilation chronicling the lives and dreams of those living in inner-city Johannesburg. Published by Duke University Press the book features 10 stories by Tanya Zack on people she met while doing research on governance and planning challenges for the municipality. These are accompanied by exquisite photos by Mark Lewis and together they offer a moving portrait of the opportunities, dangers and daily lives of those who call Joburg home.
The book launch will feature a conversation between the authors and writer and lecturer Bronwyn Law-Viljoen (author of The Printmaker and Notes on Falling). RSVP kate@lovebooks.co.za or +27 11 726 7408.
