Over the years, TAF has set itself apart for its emphasis on nurturing new talent and providing more affordable works for art lovers, alongside big-ticket pieces.
The event originally took place inside the vast Turbine Hall in Newtown (hence the name), with exhibitions and pop-up events happening throughout this interesting heritage space with its tunnels and halls. Recent editions then moved to a disused office building in Illovo, then an underground venue in Oxford Parks and now, in 2023, Hyde Park Corner.
Turbine Art Fair 2023 is packed with everything that makes TAF such a popular event, especially commissioned installations and exhibitions, a great art talks programme, exciting showcases of young and emerging artists, delicious food and drinks, a glittering opening night party and of course the main attraction, an incredible array of artworks on sale.
This year TAF has enlisted Shenaz Mahomed, Teboho Ralesai and Ashraf Jamal to curate their special programmes.
Shenaz Mahomed curates The TAF Talent/Grad Show for the 2023 edition of Turbine Art Fair. TAF Talent is a showcase of new work by recent graduates and master's students from universities across South Africa and is always a brilliant place to discover exciting emerging talent.
Teboho Ralesai returns for his second year of the TAF Unearthed exhibition. An annual TAF initiative that provides space for emerging artists to create and exhibit new works. TAF Unearthed includes a mentorship programme that culminates in a curated group exhibition at the fair featuring the work of 10 emerging artists.
TAF Off The Grid is an exhibition that places attention on predominantly emerging and mid-career artists not currently represented by galleries. This year's Off the Grid exhibitions are curated by art-writer Ashraf Jamal, author of Strange Cargo: Essays on Art.
